1815 Napoleon escaped from exile on Elba, but his return would be brief. He was finally defeated at Waterloo on 18th June 1815. Read about Napoleon here.
1839 A horse called Lottery won the first Grand National steeplechase at Aintree Racecourse in Liverpool.
1914 Titanic's sister ship, the hospital ship Britannic was launched. She was sunk two years later by a mine or a submarine. One of the survivors was Violet Jessop, who had also survived the Titanic.
