1429 Joan of Arc arrived to help relieve the besieged city of Orléans. She eventually secured the city and defeated the English.
1909 The House of Commons passed the People's Budget, which proposed the taxing of rich landowners in order to pay for old age pensions. The Lords blocked it for a year, leading to constitutional crisis and the removal of the Lords' veto.
1916 The leaders of the Easter Rising for Irish independence surrendered to the British.
1945 Hitler married Eva Braun in the Führerbunker. A day later, they both committed suicide.
1945 Soldiers of the US Seventh Army reached Dachau concentration camp. Most of the SS officers had abandoned the place, leaving their victims - both the dying and the already dead - there to rot. Many of the remaining officers were rounded up by the Americans and executed.
1992 The LA riots began after a trial jury acquitted four police officers accused of using excessive force in the arrest of Rodney King, despite it having been filmed and widely seen on television. During the six days of rioting, 63 people were killed and a further 2,383 were injured.
