1532 Thomas More resigned as Lord Chancellor, in opposition to Henry VIII's break with the Catholic Church. He was allowed, for a brief while, to live as a private citizen, but was beheaded for treason after refusing to take the Oath of Supremacy.

1943 The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, which was sparked by the ghetto's remaining Jews refusing to be transported to Treblinka, ended. To defeat them, SS commander Jürgen Stroop ordered the burning of the ghetto block by block. About 13,000 Jews died, half of whom from suffocation or being burnt alive.
